On December 18, 2015, CantaBulgarian organised a presentation and reception in Sofia. Over 120 high schoolers, university students, their teachers and parents attended the event, which was held in Grand Hotel Sofia. For two hours, we discussed questions concerning education in University of Cambridge and the UK in general, the specifics of submitting an application and the benefits of a prestigious education.
Deyan Mihaylov, President of CantaBulgarian opened the presentation and welcomed our guests, after which the Honorary President of the club, Rumen Cholakov, spoke about the activities of our Society, and introduced the application process at University of Cambridge. Following that was a panel discussion with current undergraduates, who answered numerous questions by the audience.
Following a short break, several current or past students told their stories and spoke about how Cambridge affected their lives. Velislava Petrova discussed her work at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, where she is currently a PhD student, and Denis Terpanov, president of the 2015 MBA class, presented his career previous to attending Cambridge. After that, we listened to two graduates of University of Cambridge, who currently work in Bulgaria. Ilina Angelova spoke about her work with refugees following the conflict in Syria, and Kamen Shoylev explained what it takes to study Law at University of Cambridge, and eventually to return and establish your own practice in Bulgaria.
We concluded the event with a cocktail, where our guests had the opportunity to chat informally to the speakers, and other members of the club. Many students expressed their interest in applying to Cambridge, while teachers and parents encouraged us to organise other similar events.
